The Rat in the High Castle
This is a post-apocalyptic tale of a girl who goes against the grain of life, refusing to submit to a lottery that chooses which children of a small village are killed to control population. She learns that her people, slaves to a hidden monarchy, are weak minded individuals who would rather follow the law that bans reading and writing of any form, than change a way of life. Along her journey, she discovers that helps come when least expected, but not from people.
The Forgotten Horse
The first day I saw her is still vividly imprinted upon my mind. An injured soul defined her, a battered female who fought back and lost. Somewhere upon her journey, her heart fractured. She was a nine-year old Percheron draft mix mare, coal black but for a crescent moon beneath her forelock. I was a veterinary technician, employed at an animal rescue ranch. Together we would find a way to survive.
(The Forgotten Horse is currently under construction to become a full fledged novel called "Forgotten Horses". These will be tales of several rescued horses. In the mean time, you can read about one special mare in the short story. The biographical novel will not be available for at least a year.)
